At Creekside K-9 College, we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment through a whole-school Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach. This evidence-based framework is designed to improve both academic achievement and social development by explicitly teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours aligned with our core school values: Responsibility, Honesty, Respect, and Acceptance.

Our approach draws on research from the fields of educational psychology and behavioural science, which supports proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviours to create positive school climates (Sugai & Horner, 2002). This model is implemented consistently across all year levels and learning settings within the college.

School-Wide Behaviour Expectations

Each classroom implements a behaviour management plan aligned with the school-wide PBS framework. These plans include:

  • Clear behavioural expectations taught and revisited regularly.
  • Positive reinforcement systems to encourage and reward desired behaviours.
  • Restorative practices and logical consequences to address inappropriate behaviour and support student learning.
  • Regular data collection and reflection to inform teaching and intervention strategies.

Teachers monitor student behaviour using behaviour tracking tools and collaborate regularly to ensure consistency and equity across the college.

Reward and Recognition: Creekside Gold Coin System

To reinforce positive behaviours, students are acknowledged through our Creekside Gold Coin system. When students demonstrate behaviours that align with our school values, staff reward them with a Creekside Gold Coin. These coins are collected on a personal reward chart and can be used to ‘purchase’ items or experiences at our Positive Behaviour Shop—a space designed to celebrate student effort and achievement.

This reward system not only motivates students but also helps build a positive and supportive school culture. Research shows that regular, meaningful recognition of positive behaviour contributes to increased engagement, improved relationships, and greater self-regulation among students

Responding to Student Behaviour at Creekside K-9 College

At Creekside K-9 College, we implement a School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework to ensure consistent, fair and proactive responses to student behaviour across all settings. Our approach focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours while responding constructively to inappropriate behaviours through reteaching, redirection and restorative practices.

We categorise behaviours as minor or major to ensure appropriate and consistent responses from all staff members.

Positive Reinforcement and Prevention

Creekside staff are trained in strategies that prevent escalation and promote a positive classroom climate. These include:

  • Maintaining a 6:1 ratio of positive reinforcement to correction
  • Acknowledging students who demonstrate the school values (Responsibility, Honesty, Respect, Acceptance)
  • Pre-correction and proactive reminders of expectations
  • Providing verbal and non-verbal praise
  • Proximal praise (acknowledging positive behaviour near disruptive behaviour)
  • Active supervision and engagement strategies
  • Using student interests to promote motivation and rapport
  • Clear, explicit teaching of behaviour expectations and routines
  • Frequent opportunities for student participation and contribution
  • Immediate, respectful redirection of off-task behaviour

These practices are foundational to our learning environment and help students feel safe, supported, and successful.
