The Instrumental Music Department at Creekside K-9 College offers a range of instrumental lessons, which run during school time for 30 minutes per week. Students from all year levels gain an insight into what it means to learn an instrument and apply these skills in one or more of the college ensembles. This is achieved through various semester concerts including the Brass, Woodwind and String Soiree nights, annual end of year concerts, school assemblies, opening nights, information evenings, busking day, The Arts Festival, lunchtime concerts and community events.
The ensemble based program we offer allows students to perform either within the orchestral, concert, classical and rock or acoustic streams. Teachers design the program to follow a chosen stream which allows for technical, theoretical, individual and ensemble work, which are important areas to cover when learning to play an instrument.
The instruments offered include: Violin, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar and Drum kit/ Percussion.
Students must commit to at least one ensemble, which may require extra rehearsal time. This includes String Orchestra, Concert Band, Rock Stream with Piano, Jazz / Rehearsal Band by Audition and either Piano / Guitar Ensemble and Percussion ensembles when multiple students are within a lesson. Students are encouraged to join multiple ensembles allowing for students to learn multiple streaming skills.
The music program is run in conjunction with the Victorian curriculum standards, allowing for a transition to VCE music performance subjects. These objectives are met within both the classroom and instrumental programs, including individual performances, technical and theoretical knowledge and ensemble work.
Our college is fortunate to have a strong connection with Lakeview Senior College, with instrumental music teachers across both schools. This allows the junior and senior schools to link together and access prior and developmental requirements and skills.
Our String ensemble has been fortunate enough to be invited to perform at the Caroline Springs Rotary Club annual recruitment nights, Music Count Us In public events in Geelong, hospital performances and community run events.
Creekside K-9 College will instil the values and develop the skills and knowledge students need to live effective and purposeful lives in the global community.
